Rogaine is one of the original hair loss products on the popular market, and the first ever to receive FDA approval. Despite the emergence of many new hair loss products since Rogaine was first approved, it continues to be a top-seller in its market.
Rogaine is topical foam. It is applied directly to the scalp. The manufacturer recommends twice-daily application for maximum results. It comes in two formulas: one for women and one for men.
How Does Rogaine Work?
Rogaine contains the drug Minoxidil. It is the only drug that has ever been proven to regrow hair in clinical trials. Rogaine was the first hair loss treatment to use Minoxidil in its formula.
Minoxidil was originally developed as a treatment for hypertension. As it was being studied, some users began to notice that it was causing hair growth on the head in places that were previously bald. This discovery lead to trials of Minoxidil as a treatment for baldness.
It isn’t entirely certain why Minoxidil seems to regrow hair. The conventional and widely accepted theory is that opens up the hair follicles and repels DHT, a substance in the body known to lead to hair loss. There is no evidence that Minoxidil stops further hair loss in addition to regrowing hair, though some users claim so.
Rogaine’s original formula contained 2 percent Minoxidil. Today’s men’s formula contains a 5 percent solution, while the women’s solution has 2 percent, which is a better balance for the female scalp.
Does Rogaine Really Work?
FDA-approval in and of itself seems to imply that Rogaine works, at least for some users. Indeed, the clinical studies that the FDA requires to approve a drug must actually demonstrate that a product can do what it was intended to do.
According to anecdotal evidence, many Rogaine users seem very satisfied with their results. Rogaine appears to generate moderate to substantial hair regrowth for a large number of users. Most reported having to use the product for several months before realizing significant growth. (The manufacturer recommends using the product for at least four months, applying it twice daily.)
However, it wasn’t successful at regrowing hair for all users. It isn’t known why Rogaine seems to work for a significant number of people, but not for everyone.
Our Conclusion
We believe that Rogaine is one of the better products on the market. Not only is it FDA-approved, but it has also been around for a long time, thus having had time to prove itself as an effective solution. It also receives our recommendation for having a formula for both men and women, something that many competitors’ products don’t offer.
Another plus to using this product: the foam is relatively easy to apply. It is a bit messy, but no worse than many of its competitors’ products. Be prepared, though, for the product to run. It’s a hassle, but may be worth the trouble given that so many users have found success with it. Users should also be prepared to continue treatments for several months before realizing new growth.
Rogaine seems to have two major downsides. First, it has not been clinically proven to stop further hair loss, although some users swear that it does. There is no scientific evidence to support its ability to stop new loss from occurring. Secondly, if users stop using the product, it appears that new growth will be lost again. This may necessitate a lifetime of use if the user wants to keep his or her regrowth.
