Nioxin is a three-part system designed to stop hair loss and create the look and feel of more fullness. It targets scalp health, on the premise that a healthy scalp will produce healthy hair.
Nioxin produces eight different three-part systems. Each system is formulated for a specific hair type (i.e. coarse, fine, chemically treated, etc.). Each system contains a shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in scalp treatment. The shampoo and conditioner are made for daily use. The scalp treatment is meant to be applied directly to the scalp twice daily.
How Does Nioxin Work?
Using the Nioxin system is as simple as washing and conditioning your hair daily as you normally would. The extra step comes with the scalp treatment, which the manufacturer recommends be applied twice daily.
Nioxin contains a complex list of ingredients, including glyco-proteins, amino acids and others which target specific problems. According to the manufacturer, it does not contain the high levels of alcohol normally found in ordinary shampoos and conditioners. Such ingredients can actually cause further hair damage and lead to loss and breakage.
Nioxin’s ingredients work by removing from the scalp toxins which contribute to hair loss, including DHT, a proven cause of hair loss (particularly in men). They also contain ingredients that better support the delivery of essential nutrients to the scalp and release them slowly throughout the day for maximum effect. The scalp treatment is particularly important, since it is designed to be left in and not rinsed out, resulting in consistent contact with the scalp.
Nioxin is NOT a treatment or cure for baldness. It will not regrow hair in follicles which have become dormant. It is only effective on active, productive follicles.
Does Nioxin Really Work?
If you have mild to moderate hair loss due to hormonal fluctuations (such as after having a baby) or environmental factors, Nioxin is a good choice. It seems to curb “everyday” hair loss, plus it makes existing hair shinier, softer and appear fuller. There is no real evidence that using Nioxin will stop hair loss in severe cases, particularly in cases where hair loss is due to hereditary over-production of DHT in the body.
Our Conclusion
One of the biggest complaints by users of Nioxin is that the product caused minor to severe skin irritation. Most users noticed at least a tingling sensation when using the products. Many users reported the strongest tingling sensation when using the scalp treatment.
Not all users found this sensation annoying. Some actually found it invigorating; some were not bothered by it at all.
On the other hand, some users found it so painful and irritating that they had to discontinue use. It appears that those who were most negatively affected by it were those who were pre-disposed to skin problems like allergies and eczema. Therefore, we feel it may not be the best choice for people with sensitive skin.
However, for those whose skin can tolerate it, Nioxin seems to be at least mildly effective at slowing hair loss. Many users reported healthier, smoother, shinier and fuller-looking hair. Some believed that their hair and scalps felt “cleaner.”
Nioxin is a relatively inexpensive product compared to many of its competitors. Therefore, if you don’t tend to have overly sensitive skin, it may be well worth a try. You may want to do a “skin patch” test prior to use. Rub a little bit of the product into a tiny portion of your scalp and then wait 24 to 48 hours. If you don’t notice a negative reaction, it’s probably safe to use. If you do react adversely to it, at least you won’t have lost hundreds of dollars.
