Three Male Hair Loss Treatment Myths Debunked

The market for male hair loss treatments and remedies is abundant. With so many products and treatments to choose from, it’s no wonder that so many myths abound. Here, we’ll dispel three of the most common myths. You may be able to regain that head of hair you thought you’d lost forever.

Myth #1: Lost hair can’t be regrown. This is the most common hair loss myth. It’s true that there is no “cure” for baldness. However, don’t confuse “cure” with “treatment.” While science may be getting close to finding a cure for hair loss, it has yet to find a way to alter a man’s genetic pre-disposition to going bald.

Nonetheless, there are many good, effective male hair loss treatments on the market. The key finding one that is successful is sometimes a matter of trial and error. Certain products are designed to target specific types of baldness. Male Pattern Baldness is one common example.

If you’re not sure what is contributing to your hair loss, talk with your doctor. You may need to be prepared to try more than one male hair loss treatment, or a combination of a few of them, before obtaining results.

Myth #2: Minoxidil regrows hair overnight. You may have heard of Minoxidil. It’s a revolutionary drug that regrows hair in many users. Minoxidil is most closely associated with Rogaine, a popular male hair loss treatment. Rogaine was one of the first and most well-known male hair loss treatment products to contain Minoxidil.

Minoxidil targets DHT, an androgen that is responsible for Male Pattern Baldness. It is also a vasodilator (it widens the blood vessels). It is thought that this effect may allow more nutrients and blood to reach hair follicles, though this aspect of hair regrowth is debated among scientists.

Minoxidil was originally an oral treatment for hypertension. During testing, it was discovered that it sometimes grew hair in subjects with Male Pattern Baldness. It was subsequently tested as a hair regrowth formula and marketed as a topical solution for treating baldness. Besides being found in Rogaine, it’s also the active ingredient in products such as Regaine and Mintop.

Minoxidil does work. In fact, it’s one of the most effective male hair loss treatments on the market. However, it won’t work overnight, like something out of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” It can take several weeks to several months before users see noticeable regrowth. Additionally, there is no guarantee that it will work for every user. If you’re unsure how it might affect you, talk to your doctor first.

Myth #3: Hair replacement surgery results look weird and unnatural. The beautiful thing about hair replacement is that it produces immediate results, unlike male hair loss treatments like topical solutions and oral supplements which may take months to work.

However, most men associate hair replacement with old-fashioned “plugs” of yesteryear. Though effective at replacing lost hair, they looked unnatural and fell out of favor with many sufferers of Male Pattern Baldness.

Today’s hair replacement procedures are a far cry from yesterday’s “plugs.” Numerous new methods have been developed over the decades. Procedures like Micrograft, Mini-graft and others produce a scalp and hairline that looks much more natural than those old “plugs.” Not only do you get natural-looking hair with surgical male hair loss treatments, you can have it within hours.
