The HairMax Laser Comb is a revolutionary concept in combating hair loss. It is the first major non-topical, non-oral, at-home treatment for hair loss. It was developed as a less invasive alternative to surgery and a less onerous treatment than most topical products, and a more convenient method than receiving multiple in-office treatments.
The HairMax Laser Comb is a low-level laser device. Similar to other laser devices generally used in health care offices to treat pain and other conditions, this tool is a user-friendly, at-home version.
How Does the HairMax Laser Comb Work?
The user simply turns on the device, which resembles a high-tech hairbrush both in appearance and size, and brushes it over his or her scalp. The tool uses “photo-bio stimulation,” a process which delivers laser energy to the scalp, penetrating it and revitalizing hair follicles. It contains nine laser beams which deliver “columnated” and visible light to the scalp, according to the manufacturer. The level of laser energy that it emits is low and causes little or no noticeable sensation during use, with the exception of some very mild tingling in some users.
Studies of laser therapy for hair regrowth and other applications can’t definitively pinpoint why laser seems to be successful, at least in some cases. The accepted theory, though, is that it increases blood flow/vascularization. This improved circulation allows more blood and healthy nutrients to be delivered to the affected area which may be responsible for a user’s improved condition.
The manufacturer recommends that users spend 10-15 minutes three times per week using the HairMax Laser Comb. More frequent or extended use doesn’t appear to cause harm, but also doesn’t seem to increase the benefits of use either.
Does the HairMax Laser Comb Really Work?
The HairMax Laser Comb was FDA-cleared in 2007. This should not be confused with FDA “approval.” FDA approval indicates that a product has been studied by the FDA and proved to be effective at treating whatever condition the product is being marketed as a treatment for. FDA clearance only refers to the safety of the product. In other words, the FDA recognizes that the HairMax Laser Comb is safe to use and won’t cause harm or damage to the user.
User reviews are mixed, which is typical of any kind of laser treatment for any number of conditions, including treatment for pain. Lasers appear to be effective on some users and not on others. It’s reasonable to expect that a group of people using laser to treat hair loss would experience similar results; it seems to work for some but not for others. Often it’s a matter of trial and error, and a user can’t really know for sure if it will work for him or her unless he or she tries it.
It seems that there are enough users who have experienced at least some regrowth, plus stoppage of further hair loss, to safely say that the product is effective for many users. However, the extent of its effectiveness seems to be limited, and no user has ever reported being able to return his or her hair to its original state of fullness.
Additionally, results typically took time. Though some users claimed that the treatment produced visible results in a few weeks, most anecdotal reports state that noticeable hair regrowth, if any, took several months (six months or more in some cases).
Our Conclusion
If you’re looking for a non-invasive, convenient treatment for hair loss, the HairMax Laser Comb may be worth a try. However, the device isn’t cheap, so users should be prepared to lose a significant amount of money if they discover that the product doesn’t work for them. The manufacturer does offer a money-back guarantee, but only for 20 weeks after purchase.
On a side note, the HairMax Laser Comb may provide other benefits to the scalp. It may be effective at helping to heal scars or injury to the skin.
We recommend that you only try the HairMax Laser Comb for hair loss if you are very committed to using it as directed. Many users tired of it after three or four months. As already noted, it may take six months or more to realize noticeable growth or cessation of loss. Otherwise, it’s an investment of a great deal of time and possibly a lot of money (if you don’t return the product within the specified time frame) down the drain.
