5 Best Herbal Treatments for Hair Loss

For many people hair loss is a very big concern, one that sometimes consumes their lives, so much so that they spend thousands of dollars on products that will prevent or reduce hair loss. Many of these same people have waste thousands of dollars on products that contain chemicals that may have done more damage than good to keeping your hair looking full and beautiful. In today’s society a great deal of importance is placed upon how a person looks and unfortunately a person’s hair style is one of the first things to get judged. A person who is suffering from hair loss often does not feel confident in their appearance. There are ways to reduce the rate of hair loss without spending a great deal of money. Outlined below are some of the best herbal treatments for hair loss.

Aloe Vera – Aloe Vera has become known for having soothing ingredients that work wonders on a burn or a cut but recently it has been discovered that using Aloe Vera in your hair can actually make your hair thick and healthy. All you need to do when using this herbal treatment is to rub a small amount of aloe Vera gel in your hair each night before going to bed. The nitric oxides and the superoxide in the gel will stimulate hair growth. It seems to work very well for men who are suffering from male pattern baldness at an early age.

Green Tea – This herb has been popular amongst people trying to lose weight but now it can be used to stimulate hair growth as well. It has been found that drinking two to three cups of green tea per day can drastically reduce the risk of male pattern baldness. The antioxidants in the tea convert the testosterone in the body into potent DHT.

Dong Quai – Dong Quai is also called Angelica in a number of health food stores and when used correctly it can reduce the production of DHT. This is one of the few herbal treatments that work on both men and women. It can be used in conjunction with other herbal treatments if you want something with a more powerful effect. If you cannot find this at your local health food store you are sure to find it at a traditional Chinese drugstore.

Red Pepper – Applying red pepper flesh directly to the scalp can help reduce hair loss. It has been found that the flesh of a red pepper will irritate the skin to the point that it result in the body releasing histamines. Histamines are often released when a person is suffering from an allergic reaction. While this seems more painful than helpful, it will actually stimulate the cells of the scalp and promote hair growth.

Nettle Root – This plant is very helpful when you want to reduce the rate of hair loss. The nettle root plant works best but it can be taken in the form of pill or capsule if the natural product cannot be found. This product contains lipids and minerals that stimulate hair growth starting at the follicles. It is most effective when taken with another herb such as Dong Quai but has shown results when taken alone.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Gradual thinning is a normal part of the aging process. Hair Loss may lead to baldness. Most people normally shed 50 to 100 hairs a day. However, when the rate of shedding exceeds the rate of re-growth, it may become necessary to check with your primary care physician.

There are various reasons a person may have hair loss. A few major causes are; stress, drugs, skin disorders, menopause, iron deficiency, genetics and aging.

Basic Form of Hair

The basic form of hair is a biomaterial generally found in the (dermis) skin. Almost our entire body is covered in hair. Hair is produced in deep follicles deep in the skin. Hair is the only part of our body structure that is renewable without scarring.

Hair is mostly made from protein, and its main element is Keratin. Keratin is a fibrous protein found in hair, nails and skin, and gives elasticity to dyes such as henna stick to the skin.

Drugs

Side effects of many drugs may cause hair loss. A few of these drugs whose side effects include hair loss are; anti-acne drugs, meds that thin the blood, ACE inhibitors for blood pressure or heart failure, drugs which are a treatment for stabilizing moods, anti cancer drugs and many more.

Skin Disorders

Alopecia Areata is a hair-loss condition affecting the scalp. Sometimes it may affect other parts of the body. This disorder affects both male and females, and is caused by an abnormality in the immune system. Cause of this disorder unknown.

Baldness may be a genetic gene when hair follicle and or scalp has suffered damage. If loss of hair is due to a hormonal problem then it becomes treatable. Balding is not respectful of anyone. Teens as well as adults may be affected. Our best defense again continued hair loss and baldness is education and understanding of what causes baldness.

Types of Hair Loss

Androgenic Hair Loss is the loss of hair making round bald patches. This type of hair loss is considered genetic.

Chronic Telogen Effluvium mostly occurs in women caused by blood loss to the menstrual cycle. Hair loss during this time is reversible by adding iron to the diet.

Hormonal hair loss is normally temporary. During pregnancy women generally stop losing hair, but after childbirth their body will go back to normal.

Iron Deficiency

One of the main symptoms of Iron Deficiency is hair loss. Before taking iron supplements it is a good idea to check with your doctor since a deficiency of iron could be an underlying medical condition.

Damaged Hair

Women in particular put their hair under an enormous amount of stress such as, hair dryers, hot rollers, dyes, bleaches, hair straightening, permanent waves, and chemical cosmetics. All of this may lead to dry, broken and thinning hair. Proper brushing can bring luster to conditioning the hair. Be gentle, and do not brush your hair when wet. Hair is fragile. Since hair is not a living tissue, it can not repair itself.

What Are the Best Vitamins for Hair Loss?

When shopping for vitamins to prevent hair loss it is important to understand an overnight change will not be visible. It is also important to understand, in some cases, the process of taking vitamins for hair loss maybe to late. The advantage of taking the required vitamins should slow down the hair loss process. Research is ongoing and improving in cause and treatment for loss of hair.

There are a few leading causes of hair loss including stress and pollution. People who suffer from hair loss tend to suffer from a vitamin deficiency in their diets. It is essential to verify the problem of hair loss. Hair loss prevention involves several factors depending on the cause. Good hygiene with regular shampooing is a basic step.

Vitamins Preventing Hair Loss

The most popular vitamin that aids in the prevention of hair loss is Biotin or Vitamin H. This vitamin has been proven to prevent hair loss. Another benefit of Biotin is its preventions of gray hair. Vitamin H is found in milk, yeast and egg yolks.

Iron

Taking an iron supplement can make a significant change in hair growth. Lack of iron not only cause anemia in the body, but contributes to hair loss. The daily value for iron is 18 milligrams. Women may lose hair due to heavy menstrual periods which causes the loss of iron in a woman’s body. Vitamins and minerals do not seem to affect hair growth in men.

Vitamin-B

Eating foods with Vitamin B content will increase hair growth and reduce hair loss. Vitamin B complex is an ingredient in shampoos and conditioners which aid in strengthening hair follicles to reduce hair loss.

Various vitamins

There are many vitamins that are essential in reversing scalp problems. Some of the vitamins have other uses as well. The following list may be worth examining for problems of hair loss. They are: Zinc-which is found in red meat, Anti-Oxidants- such as Vitamins A,C and E- commonly taken for beautiful clear skin, Protein-commonly found in meat and poultry, and Pantothenic Acid- a mineral vital to a healthy scalp.

Newer studies have suggested Vitamin D, which may be somewhat helpful and worth the time. Hair growth supplements should be approached with mild caution.

Vitamins Especially for Hair

Hair grows through three phases: growing, resting and shedding. Every hair follicle must go through these three phases. Hormonal changes, irritation or damage cause some hair follicles to have a shorter growth time. Once a hair has fallen out, the new growth stage will begin again.

A multi-vitamin especially for hair will not repair any damage or prevent further damage. Beauty salons offer hair care products that include vitamins to rebuild hair strength and keep it from breaking. Using hair vitamins with MSM will naturally lengthen and allow hair to grow much longer before entering the resting and shedding phases.

Hair is not just skin deep. Without proper diet and nutrition hair loss treatments may be a waste of time.

Three Home Remedies for Hair Loss

A significant number of adults experience mild to moderate hair loss at some point in their lifetimes. In fact, it’s not your imagination: your hair gets thinner as you age. However, you may still be distressed by thinning hair or perhaps even the appearance of bald patches. Fortunately there are a number of home remedies for hair loss. They don’t require a doctor’s prescription or any expensive or invasive surgeries.

Why do we lose hair as we age? Genetic and environmental factors aside, adults lose hair as a normal part of the aging process. This is because everything in the human body slows down as we age and that includes the hair follicles (where hair is produced).

Hair growth happens in three stages: the anagen phase, the catagen phase and the telogen phase. The anagen, or “growing” phase lasts for 3-5 years. The follicle continuously produces new cells during this time.

This is followed by the catagen phase during which the follicle prepares for a period of rest. It lasts approximately 1-2 weeks. This “resting” phase is known as the telogen stage. The follicle rests during this time, a period of 6-8 weeks. No new hair cells are formed in this stage. Existing hairs eventually fall out for lack of an anchoring root.

As we age, two things happen to our hair. First, new hair cells grow more slowly. Secondly, the telogen stage lasts much longer than it did in our younger days. Both of these factors lead to what appears as “thinning” hair.

Besides natural slowing of the growth process, adults may also lose hair due to genetic factors, such as androgenic alopecia (Male/Female Pattern Baldness). Hair may also be lost because of harsh environmental circumstances or because of various illnesses or disorders.

Some types of thinning and balding respond better to certain home remedies for hair loss than others. If your loss is extensive, as with androgenic alopecia, you may want to consult a doctor about the best treatment for your situation.

If you are experiencing mild to moderate loss or thinning, there are a number of remedies for hair loss that you can use at home. You can also try these if you simply want to make your scalp and follicles healthier and ward off loss for longer:

1) Fortified shampoos/conditioners: Skip the shampoo aisle at the drug store. These products contain mainly perfumes and detergents. They’re okay for getting your hair clean, but they don’t do a good job of delivering nutrients to your scalp.

Opt for a shampoo/conditioner combo that’s fortified with the kinds of nutrients your follicles need and can actually absorb. These are most often found online or in some salons. Choose products that are specifically designed to prevent hair loss. The very best shampoo and hair loss product is Provillus. Check it out here.

2) Oral supplements: Good nutrition starts from the inside-out, no matter what body part you’re targeting. That includes the scalp. You can find a number of good oral supplements which contain natural herbal ingredients that support a healthy scalp and follicles. The very best hair loss supplements is Provillus. Check it out here.

3) Scalp treatments: A scalp treatment typically comes in the form of foam, gel or liquid that is applied directly to the scalp. It is left in so that it maintains constant contact with the scalp for maximum effectiveness.

Some scalp treatments are naturally-based (contains only natural/herbal ingredients). Others contain synthetic ingredients like Minoxidil (an FDA-approved drug that successfully regrows hair for a significant number of users). Be sure to read the product information or label so that you know what kind you’re actually getting. The very best hair loss scalp treatment is Provillus. Check it out here.

These remedies for hair loss range in price. It’s important to note that it can take several weeks or even months before results are evident, especially with herbal products. Stick with a consistent program and you’ll probably notice your hair slowly changing and “bouncing back” to its former glory.

What to Look for in a Natural Hair Loss Treatment

Natural hair loss treatments are rising quickly in popularity over some of the more “traditional” hair loss formulas that are largely chemical-based. Some of today’s products are being touted as “miracle” solutions. Others appear to be little more than “snake oil.” It can be confusing at best and difficult at worst to find a natural hair loss treatment that really produces results. To understand how a natural hair loss treatment should work, it’s important to understand how hair grows, and what causes it to stop growing.

Every person, regardless of race, sex or genetics, is born with a certain number of hair follicles. That number does not change with time, age or disease. What does change is how those follicles continue to work (or stop working) over time.

Each hair follicle produces cells which become hair. As more cells are produced, the cells group together and get pushed up and out through the individual follicles. Once the cells burst through the surface of the skin, they are considered to be “dead.” (This is why hair does not hurt when it is cut.) The only part of the hair that actually contains live cells is the root, the part that lies underneath the surface of the skin.

Baldness occurs when a number of hair follicles stop producing new hair cells. The existing live cells eventually get pushed up and out, and then quickly fall out altogether because they are dead. No new hair takes its place.

Follicles can stop producing new cells for a number of reasons. They may temporarily stop manufacturing due to illness or environmental factors, or to extenuating circumstances, such as chemotherapy treatment for cancer.

More often, they cease production because of hormonal and/or genetic factors. Many men experience a type of permanent baldness known as androgenic alopecia, also known as Male Pattern Baldness, or MPB. Women can also suffer permanent baldness known as Female Pattern Baldness, or FPB, though it is less common than MPB in men.

MPB is believed to have its roots in genetics. All men tend to lose hair over time, but men with male family members who experience MPB moderately to severely are more prone to experience it themselves. The causes of FPB are less clear, and probably relate more to environmental factors and hormonal changes than genetics.

MPB and FPB were once thought to be permanent conditions. However, drug treatments have been developed over the years that have been successful at reversing MPB and FPB. Until recently, most of these treatments have been chemically-based, making many users wary of taking or applying them.

Today, newer treatments have been and are being developed that are more herbal-based. These treatments use various combinations of herbs and natural ingredients that have historically been associated with hair re-growth.

An effective natural hair loss treatment does not cause new hair follicles to grow. Instead, it works by “waking up” dormant existing hair follicles, causing them to begin producing hair cells again as they once did.

To find a natural hair loss treatment that works, look for ingredients that have been known to be used successfully for re-growing hair. Some of these ingredients include saw palmetto, stinging nettle, henna and even vitamin B6. These herbs, when balanced correctly with one another and with other proven hair re-growth supplements, have been reported by many users to successfully re-stimulate growth in follicles.

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern baldness (or MPB) is a very common condition. It affects roughly of men at any given time. Although it is a perfectly normal condition, a majority of men who experience Male Pattern Baldness find themselves feeling at least some level of distress or discomfort over their hair loss at some point during their lives, particularly when hair loss first begins occurring. While some men simply adjust and accept their MPB, a significant number of them feel so upset by their hair loss that it interferes with a healthy state of emotions.

While there is a lot that is known about this condition (also known as androgenic alopecia), there is also a great deal that isn’t understood. Scientists and experts today understand that MPB is triggered by hormonal changes which cause hair follicles to stop producing new hair cells. What isn’t known for sure, but is believed to be related to genetics, is why these hormonal changes occur in some men but not in others. Experts agree that a man who has male relatives with MPB is more prone to experience hair loss themselves.

Baldness in both men and women occurs when hair follicles cease to produce new hair cells. The hair follicles themselves do not “die” or disappear. Instead, they simply become dormant. In some cases of dormancy, follicles may begin producing cells again later. This is particularly common when factors, such as illness or external factors like chemotherapy treatment for cancer, temporarily disrupt the normal function of the follicles. Once these external circumstances return to normal, the follicles begin to function again.

In Male Pattern Baldness, however, proper functioning of the follicles seems to be permanently disrupted. It was once believed that this condition could not be reversed, and that the only hope a man with hair loss had of having a full head of hair again was to receive a hair transplant.

Science now knows that MPB can actually be reversed in many cases for many sufferers with the right combination of supplements and/or treatments. Numerous treatments have in fact been developed over the last few decades that have been shown to re-grow hair in some sufferers of MPB.

These early treatments had three major drawbacks. First, many were simply too expensive. Secondly, they had to be used for the duration of the user’s life in order to maintain hair re-growth, making the desire to have a full head of hair a very costly lifestyle choice. Thirdly, many of these treatments were largely chemical-based, which was a turn-off to potential users who were reluctant to expose themselves to such chemicals for extended periods of time.

Fortunately, today’s hair loss product market is full of products that are more natural and less harsh than many earlier products. Some of the best products contain natural ingredients such as Stinging Nettle and Saw Palmetto and others which have long been associated with and used for hair re-growth. Not only are these products more natural, many of them are considerably less expensive.

Male Pattern Baldness differs from other types of hair loss. For this reason, it is important to choose a product that is specifically designed for men in order to achieve maximum results. It is also important to note that not every product works for every user. Scientists aren’t sure why some men seem to be able to reverse hair loss while others cannot. It is sometimes a simple matter of trial and error to discover a product that works for a particular individual.

Three Male Hair Loss Treatment Myths Debunked

The market for male hair loss treatments and remedies is abundant. With so many products and treatments to choose from, it’s no wonder that so many myths abound. Here, we’ll dispel three of the most common myths. You may be able to regain that head of hair you thought you’d lost forever.

Myth #1: Lost hair can’t be regrown. This is the most common hair loss myth. It’s true that there is no “cure” for baldness. However, don’t confuse “cure” with “treatment.” While science may be getting close to finding a cure for hair loss, it has yet to find a way to alter a man’s genetic pre-disposition to going bald.

Nonetheless, there are many good, effective male hair loss treatments on the market. The key finding one that is successful is sometimes a matter of trial and error. Certain products are designed to target specific types of baldness. Male Pattern Baldness is one common example.

If you’re not sure what is contributing to your hair loss, talk with your doctor. You may need to be prepared to try more than one male hair loss treatment, or a combination of a few of them, before obtaining results.

Myth #2: Minoxidil regrows hair overnight. You may have heard of Minoxidil. It’s a revolutionary drug that regrows hair in many users. Minoxidil is most closely associated with Rogaine, a popular male hair loss treatment. Rogaine was one of the first and most well-known male hair loss treatment products to contain Minoxidil.

Minoxidil targets DHT, an androgen that is responsible for Male Pattern Baldness. It is also a vasodilator (it widens the blood vessels). It is thought that this effect may allow more nutrients and blood to reach hair follicles, though this aspect of hair regrowth is debated among scientists.

Minoxidil was originally an oral treatment for hypertension. During testing, it was discovered that it sometimes grew hair in subjects with Male Pattern Baldness. It was subsequently tested as a hair regrowth formula and marketed as a topical solution for treating baldness. Besides being found in Rogaine, it’s also the active ingredient in products such as Regaine and Mintop.

Minoxidil does work. In fact, it’s one of the most effective male hair loss treatments on the market. However, it won’t work overnight, like something out of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” It can take several weeks to several months before users see noticeable regrowth. Additionally, there is no guarantee that it will work for every user. If you’re unsure how it might affect you, talk to your doctor first.

Myth #3: Hair replacement surgery results look weird and unnatural. The beautiful thing about hair replacement is that it produces immediate results, unlike male hair loss treatments like topical solutions and oral supplements which may take months to work.

However, most men associate hair replacement with old-fashioned “plugs” of yesteryear. Though effective at replacing lost hair, they looked unnatural and fell out of favor with many sufferers of Male Pattern Baldness.

Today’s hair replacement procedures are a far cry from yesterday’s “plugs.” Numerous new methods have been developed over the decades. Procedures like Micrograft, Mini-graft and others produce a scalp and hairline that looks much more natural than those old “plugs.” Not only do you get natural-looking hair with surgical male hair loss treatments, you can have it within hours.

Hair Regrowth for Women: What is Female Pattern Baldness?

The hair regrowth products market has always been largely dominated by formulas for men. However, there are more products touting hair regrowth for women today than ever before.

This is good news for sufferers of Female Pattern Baldness, or FPB. It’s a much rarer condition that its male counterpart, Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). It is by no means any less traumatic, though. In fact, balding women tend to suffer much more deeply from their hair loss than men do. This is because, although most men would keep their hair if given a choice, baldness in men is accepted by society as “normal.”

Women, on the other hand, tend to base much of their self-worth on their looks. Hair plays a large role in this. A woman’s femininity and even her sexuality is often tied in with her hair. To lose her hair feels tantamount to losing her femininity and sex appeal.

Both FPB and MPB are forms of the condition known as androgenic alopecia. Androgenic alopecia is caused by an excess of the hormone known as DHT in the body. DHT is formed when testosterone reacts with the enzyme known as 5 alpha reductase. DHT is an androgen, a hormone that is responsible for the development of male characteristics. Androgen receptors in the scalp draw in DHT. The DHT, in turn, blocks the follicles and causes hair loss.

Since women’s bodies produce less testosterone and their scalps contain fewer androgen receptors, women tend to experience hair loss differently than men. Their loss may be more widely distributed and less concentrated than men’s. Women with Female Pattern Baldness do not tend to develop complete bald spots, but rather patches that are thinning, or an all-over thinness of hair.

Not all female hair loss can be attributed to Female Pattern Baldness. Women may also lose hair due to hormonal changes (such as those that occur after giving birth), stress or trauma. Environmental factors may also play a role.

It makes sense, then, that products for hair regrowth for women should be different from those for men. In fact, some treatments made for men can actually be toxic to women and lead to birth defects in developing fetuses.

The type of product that is best for you depends on your particular condition and its cause. If you are unsure, speak to your doctor, especially if you suspect you are suffering from Female Pattern Baldness. This type of loss may need to be treated differently than other types.

Optimal hair regrowth for women must start with a healthy diet and regular exercise. After all, hair follicles are living parts of your body with the same kinds of nutritional needs as the rest of your parts. The scalp needs strong nutrients to remain healthy and continue producing hair faster than it’s lost. Regular exercise ensures that the blood circulates properly, thus delivering those essential nutrients to the scalp.

A simple oral supplement containing herbs and vitamins that hair craves may be all that’s necessary to restore thinning hair to normal. Fortified shampoos, conditioners and/or scalp treatments can also be helpful. All of these are relatively inexpensive products to invest in.

Women whose hair loss is due to Female Pattern Baldness may need to try a product with Minoxidil in it. It was the first, and still is one of the only, treatment for hair regrowth that was approved by the FDA and proven to regrow hair.

Remember, hair regrowth for women is different than for men. For this reason, choose a formula with a 2 percent Minoxidil solution. It’s safer and more suitable for women than the 5 percent solution men need.

Do Hair Regrowth Treatments Work on All Types of Baldness?

The hair regrowth treatment market is a multi-million dollar one in North America alone. This doesn’t surprise many consumers. After all, North Americans put a lot of stock in their hair. Many people, especially women, have self esteems that are wrapped up in their hair: lose the hair, and the self-esteem often goes with it.

Fortunately, there are a number of options for people who have lost some or all of their hair. However, it’s important to realize that, while there are many hair regrowth treatment products out there, not all types of baldness respond to them.

There are five major types of hair loss/baldness. They are:

1) Androgenic (or Androgenetic) Alopecia: This is the most common type of visible baldness. In men it’s referred to as Male Pattern Baldness. In women it’s known as Female Pattern Baldness.

Androgenic alopecia affects many more men that women. It also typically manifests differently in males than in females. Men with androgenic alopecia tend to lose all of the hair in one or more large patches on the scalp.

Women, on the other hand, tend not to go completely bald. Instead, they frequently experience patches of thinness or even all-over thinness. Rarely do women experience complete baldness from androgenic alopecia.

2) Alopecia Areata: This type of hair loss is characterized by complete bald patches in one or more places on the scalp. It’s an auto-immune disorder in which the body’s own natural defense system recognizes hair cells as “foreign” bodies. They attack the follicles and prevent new hair from growing. In essence, it’s like being allergic to one’s own hair.

Alopecia areata affects both males and females. It tends to strike during childhood, the teen years or early adulthood. However, it’s possible to develop it at any point in life.

3) Alopecia Totalis: This condition is the same as alopecia areata, except it affects the entire scalp. Like alopecia areata, it tends to strike in childhood, the teen years or early adulthood.

4) Alopecia Universalis: People with this condition lose all of their body hair in addition to that of the scalp. Its characteristics are the same as those of the previous two described conditions.

In the cases of alopecia areata, totalis and universalis, it’s possible that the sufferer may outgrow the condition. However, there are never any guarantees. Some sufferers go their entire lives without ever obtaining a full head of hair.

5) Traction alopecia: This condition is developed in response to consistent rubbing or pulling of a particular area on the scalp. Traction alopecia is common in infants who tend to spend most or all of their time on their backs. Constant friction between the back of the baby’s skull and bedding results in a small bald spot. This usually disappears when an infant learns to sit up and spends less time on his or her back.

Wearing hair in barrettes, braids or ponytails too often and/or for too long can also lead to traction alopecia. This is one reason that hair stylists often advise clients, particularly women, not sleep with barrettes or ponytails in their hair.

The only types of hair loss that may respond to hair regrowth treatments are androgenic alopecia and traction alopecia. Additionally, women who have noticed increased hair loss after giving birth can also benefit from the right hair regrowth treatment.

Are Hair Loss Products and Hair Regrowth Products the Same Thing?

There’s a lot of confusion about hair loss and the products that claim to treat it. The key to finding a product that is really capable of treating baldness is understanding the difference betweeen “hair loss” products and “hair regrowth” products.

Products which claim to treat “hair loss” do not necessarily support “hair regrowth.” Similarly, “hair regrowth” products might be effective at producing hair in places where it has been lost, but they may not help prevent further loss.

If hair regrowth is your main goal, you’ll likely need to look for products which contain the drug Minoxidil or Finasteride. These are the only hair regrowth products that are FDA approved and proven to grow hair in spots that were formerly bald. This is not to say they will work for everyone. It is simply that they are the only products given official recognition as having the ability to produce regrowth in some users.

Minoxidil and Finasteride are marketed under numerous different brand names. Rogaine was the first hair regrowth product to use Minoxidil in its formula. Today there are a number of products which contain it. Finasteride is found in Propecia, another popular hair regrowth product.

Baldness can have a variety of causes. However, it appears that a significant majority of hair loss sufferers have an excess of DHT in their bodies. DHT is a hormone that is formed as a by-product of a normal enzyme, 5 alpha reductase, and testosterone. When these two substances combine, DHT is formed.

It then gets delivered throughout the body via the circulatory system. For the most part it is relatively harmless in other parts of the body. In the scalp, though, it causes active hair follicles to shrink. Eventually they may simply go into a permanent state of dormancy.

It’s normal for follicles to experience periods of dormancy. This gives them a chance to rest and replenish themselves. They will naturally return to active production after the dormancy period.

Those affected by DHT, on the other hand, will not return to normal production. Instead, they revert into what was once considered permanent inactivity.

Both Minoxidil and Finasteride are DHT blockers. In other words, they prevent DHT from forming. They may successfully “wake up” dormant follicles and stimulate them to produce hair again in some users.

There are a number of other products on the market which claim to treat baldness “naturally.” They contain mainly herbal ingredients. In the interest of marketing themselves as “natural,” they typically don’t contain Minoxidil or Finasteride because they are synthetic drugs.

However, though many of these natural ingredients are associated with healthy hair, they will not necessarily regrow hair where it has been lost. Some do seem to work for some users, but none have been proven to work for as many users as hair regrowth products containing Minoxidil and Finasteride.

Additionally, those whose hair loss is related to something other than DHT over-production will probably not be able to regrow hair with Minoxidil or Finasteride. In such cases, natural hair regrowth products may be a better choice, although it may take several months of use and some trial and error to achieve new growth.
